In mineral processing plants, over half of the electricity cost comes from the ball mill. The larger the feed size, the heavier the grinding load—higher power consumption, faster steel ball wear, and lower throughput. This is the core logic of “more crushing, less grinding”: crushing consumes less energy, grinding consumes more. By making the crushing stage do more of the size reduction work, the ball mill’s burden is significantly reduced.
The Hua Sheng Ming roll crusher, placed ahead of the ball mill, is designed precisely for this purpose.
On-site Application at a Gold Mine in Northwest China
The customer introduced the Hua Sheng Ming 1212 roll crusher for fine crushing after jaw crusher and cone crusher. Feed size is 2cm, output size is under 5mm. Combined with the ball mill for grinding, this achieves “more crushing, less grinding” — grinding efficiency significantly improved, processing capacity increased.
Based on feedback from multiple on-site operations, the following improvements are commonly observed after installing a roll crusher ahead of the ball mill:

Roll Crusher Ahead of Ball Mill
Ball mill current fluctuation significantly reduced, operating load stabilized: With uniform feed size, the ball mill load remains stable and no longer fluctuates frequently.
Throughput per hour increased: Feed size to the ball mill reduced from 12mm to under 4mm, grinding time shortened, and system capacity significantly improved.
Steel ball consumption reduced: Finer feed material with micro-cracks leads to slower ball wear rates and reduced ball replenishment frequency.
Liner service life extended: Reduced impact from large particles extends the service life of liners and diaphragms.
Overall power consumption decreased: Crushing consumes far less energy than grinding. Replacing part of the ball mill work with the roll crusher lowers overall plant power consumption.
Roll Crusher vs. High-Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR): How to Choose?
The roll crusher has a lower investment threshold and is easier to maintain, making it suitable for medium-scale operations. The HPGR requires higher upfront investment but delivers greater long-term energy savings, making it more suitable for large-scale modern processing plants.
