In the rock tin ore processing flowsheet, the selection of fine crushing equipment directly affects downstream grinding efficiency and cassiterite recovery. Cassiterite is a medium-hard but extremely brittle mineral. Traditional impact crushers tend to generate excessive over-grinding, causing fine cassiterite particles to be lost in downstream gravity separation circuits.

A rock tin ore project in the DRC employs a complete three-stage crushing process: jaw crusher for primary crushing, fine jaw crusher for secondary crushing, and two Hua Sheng Ming full-hydraulic 1200×1000 roll crushers for final fine crushing. Combined with a vibrating feeder and vibrating screen in a closed-circuit system, the process reduces 500mm run-of-mine ore to below 5mm.

The Unique Challenge of Rock Tin Ore Crushing

In rock tin ore, cassiterite is closely intergrown with gangue minerals such as quartz and feldspar. The goal of crushing is to liberate the ore to a particle size suitable for gravity separation while preserving the integrity of cassiterite particles as much as possible. Cassiterite is brittle and prone to producing slimes that are difficult to recover, making over-grinding control at the crushing stage critical to improving recovery.

Given the brittle nature of cassiterite, the processing principle of “recover early, discard early” applies. This means protecting cassiterite particles from excessive size reduction during the crushing stage to minimize metal loss.

Process Adaptability of the Roll Crusher

Hua Sheng Ming roll crushers are explicitly suited for tin ore processing. Designed for the brittle nature of rock tin ore, the equipment offers several process advantages:

Low Over-grinding Rate: Static pressure compression replaces high-speed impact, effectively protecting brittle cassiterite and minimizing fine particle generation. Since cassiterite easily produces unrecoverable slimes during crushing and grinding, controlling over-grinding is key to improving recovery.

Concentrated and Controllable Particle Size: The hydraulic system allows online roll gap adjustment, enabling precise control of discharge size to below 5mm with a narrow particle size distribution, providing uniform feed for downstream gravity separation.

Capacity Assurance: Two roll crushers operating in parallel ensure the required processing capacity while maintaining fine crushing performance.

Stable Operation: The roll crusher offers high tolerance to material moisture content, accommodating clay-bearing materials that may accompany rock tin ore during crushing.

Process Configuration Logic

The three-stage crushing configuration fully embodies the “more crushing, less grinding” principle. Jaw crushers and fine jaw crushers handle primary and secondary crushing, while two roll crushers in parallel complete the final fine crushing stage, reducing the feed size to the grinding circuit to below 5mm and significantly lowering downstream grinding load. Grinding energy consumption is typically more than four times that of crushing, making enhanced fine crushing and reduced mill feed size important directions for energy savings in concentrators.

Given the brittle nature of cassiterite, the “recover early, discard early” principle applies. Controlling over-grinding at the crushing stage is key to improving cassiterite recovery. The roll crusher replaces impact crushing with inter-particle compression, achieving the target particle size while controlling over-grinding, providing reliable equipment support for the “more crushing, less grinding” approach.
